Driving lessons & instructor training

Practical development for qualified ADIs

Standards check training. Prepare with clarity and confidence.

When your livelihood depends on your instruction, a standards check can feel daunting—even after years of teaching. Get one-to-one support to understand the assessment and review how you deliver lessons.

Whether you’ve received an invitation, had an unsuccessful attempt or want to refresh your approach after a long gap, we’ll start with your experience and the support you need.

Make preparation purposeful.

  • Understand the expectations

Connect the assessment competencies with your everyday teaching.

  • Review your lesson delivery

Identify strengths, habits and areas needing further development.

  • Agree practical improvements

Use clear feedback to develop your decisions and teaching approach.

Prepare before the pressure builds. You can seek training before receiving an invitation, as part of your ongoing professional development.

Understand the assessment landscape

A long gap between checks. A reason to review your approach.

Years of teaching can build valuable experience, but being observed and assessed may still feel unfamiliar. Reviewing your practice helps you understand the expectations before an invitation arrives.

Selection has evolved over time

Pupil driving-test performance indicators now help inform which instructors are called for standards checks. DVSA also considers other factors, so those indicators are not the only basis for selection.

The assessment focuses on your ability to teach in line with the national standard. Training helps you connect lesson planning, risk management and teaching skills with what actually happens in your lessons.

Delays can add uncertainty

DVSA acknowledged in September 2026 that many standards checks had not taken place and that resourcing pressures had affected delivery. It also said it was increasing the number of checks.

An extended gap can leave you unsure when you’ll be assessed and allow teaching habits to go unreviewed. You can use that time for professional development rather than waiting for an appointment before seeking feedback.

Your livelihood matters. Preparation should be practical.

The possibility of an unsuccessful result can feel daunting when you’ve invested years in your career. We’ll discuss your concerns, review your teaching and agree areas to develop without using that anxiety to pressure you into training.

One unsuccessful check does not automatically mean losing your registration. DVSA allows up to two further attempts. Failing three times leads to removal from the ADI register and a requirement to retake the qualifying tests to rejoin.
